NYE Style and Resolutions

Posted on: December 31st, 2014 by Emma No Comments

This NYE edition of Style on the Steps is my suggestion for a relaxed but sparkly NYE outfit, perfect for party to relaxed supper.

It is also accompanied in time honoured tradition with New Year’s resolutions. Taking my cue from two separate magazine pieces written almost a year apart* I have focused on a look back on the achievements of the year gone past. Not the big stuff that might still yet to be achieved, which as both articles point out can make you feel lacking and inadequate, but all those seemingly small things that make an immeasurable difference to your wellbeing and happiness. This approach appeals to me because I tend to focus on what I should have done rather than actual accomplishments.

Having made a big change to my working life just before the start of the year, I think that my achievements all link to the goal that was behind the change – to have the luxury of time in my life to spend on all the smaller things that mean more than work. I learnt new skills, read interesting books and articles, caught up and spend proper time with friends and family -near and far, made time for my husband and our lives together. Above all I managed to do these things without them causing the usual stress of “when will I fit it in? For me a massive achievement.

Here are the mini-milestones that made my year, I’d love to hear about yours:-

  • Was (and continue to be) part of a thriving new W.I. group which has introduced me to new friends and taught me lots from nutrition to crafting (even given me chance to be in a fashion show);
  • Evening walks with my husband and sometimes having his dinner ready when he gets home (retro I know but he never expects it);
  • Saw at least one exhibition I read about instead of just wishing I had gone (David Bailey’s Stardust);
  • Embraced clothes/jewellery I would not previously have considered (floral print trousers and layered necklaces);
  • Visited a City I had never been to – Bristol;
  • Made contact with cousins and met one of them and all of her family when they visited the UK;
  • Enjoyed many weekends with closest, dearest and oldest friends;
  • Went to the theatre more than once, including a fab girly evening of Sing-a Long a Grease
  • Raced for Life (and ran it);
  • Spent a whole week with my Mum, doing nothing in particular but really got to speak to her;
  • Read fiction that was out of my comfort zone;
  • Read non-fiction, which I not only finished but enjoyed (thank you Arianna Huffington for Thrive);
  • Joined Instagram and Twitter (still learning!);
  • Discovered and then used lots of local shops and businesses – shout out to Haddie and Trilby (although they may be responsible for that extra half a stone that has crept on!);
  • Hosted very special surprise 40th birthday celebrations;
  • A roadtrip with French friends which included Cannes Film Festival (OK, this one is a cheat because it was on the bucket list).

Writing these has made me smile. My resolution for 2015 is going to be to ditch the “Coulda, woulda, shoulda” and concentrate on those things I have achieved and what a difference they make.

Happy New Year

Small Business Saturday -Little Black Book of Leamington

Small-Business-Saturday-UK-2014-Logo-Blue

This blog is a re-issue of an earlier blog I thought it a great opportunity to share again in light of Small Business Saturday this weekend.

As someone lucky enough to live in and be part of a town which has a large array of small and independent businesses, I am passionate about supporting it’s high street.  So here are SYW’s Leamington favourites, old and new. The key that binds them all together is that personal touch and service you get, one thing is for sure wherever you go in Leamington there is always a warm welcome.

Leamington at Christmas

Leamington at Christmas

Lilac Rose – 69 Regent Street, L.Spa www.facebook.com/lilacrosesshop
I cannot make a trip into town without stopping in at this gorgeous boutique (in fact if I try my husband asks if I am ill!) Offering individual vintage style clothing, accessories and gifts. Staffed by a lovely, friendly, team who are always prepared to help out, offer opinions and give further information on the ranges stocked, which include Closet, Darling and Emily and Finn. Will appeal to those who like classic with a modern twist. Perfect for sourcing that great little dress that will see you through a variety of events or for that go with everything pretty scarf. – Also has a shop in Cambridge.

Boutique Shopping

Boutique Shopping

Revolve – 88 Warwick Street, L Spa www.revolvefashions.co.uk
High on the glamour factor and great at bringing that feel to everyday outfits, that’s how I would describe this Leamington institution. Their window displays really stand out and I long for the lifestyle they depict, whether it’s a pair of suede ankle boots teamed with jeans and statement jacket or a selection of their evening gowns. Whether you are looking for an everyday outfit with that special touch or something more formal, you are in good hands with the Revolve team to help you look and feel a million dollars.

Karabo – 40 Warwick Street, L Spa www.karaboclothing.co.uk
Independent boutique focusing on brands that aren’t seen everywhere, mostly separates and casual dressing. One of my best purchases ever was a quirky take on the waxed jacket by the brand “Not the Same”, practical but still stylish. Great line in shoes and bags, one client I took shopping here bought the most comfortable pair of shoes she ever had.  I have an orange clutch purchased here that people often mistake for designer. They have a fab selection of branded jeans including “Not Your Daughters”. My go to place when I am looking for something that lifts me out of the plain old jeans and jumper rut.

Bejewelled Inspiration

Bejewelled Inspiration

Peter Stephan – 98 Warwick Street, L Spa www.peterstephan.co.uk
For jewellery and watches Colin and Sandy bring the personal touch and make you feel as if your purchase is worth thousands even if you are spending considerably less.  Extremely knowledgeable and skilled jewellers, they will always take the time to explain the differences in the pieces on offer. They will also help give ideas or even narrow down your choices when you can’t decide. Offering good value too, I sourced 3 bridesmaids gifts here well within my modest budget. Perfect for special occasions or just that little treat.

If you fancy something quirky or the latest must have in trendy & fashion jewellery, then Fabulous Collections, 20 Lower Mall, Royal Priors Centre, L Spa. www.fabulouscollections.co.uk a recent discovery is also worth a visit, stocking brands such as Nikki Lissoni, Folli Follie, Pandora and Chlobo.Leamington Parade

Clements & Church – 23 Park Street, L Spa. www.clementsandchurch.co.uk
The men of Leamington could do with a few more boutique offerings for casual wear but on the smart/formal side they are extremely well served by Clements & Church. Despite the rapid expansion (outposts in Birmingham, Solihull & Oxford), you always receive personal service and recognition along with expert knowledge when you visit this store. Offering formal wear including tuxedos, suits, shirts and blazers from tailors skilled in their trade. Only a limited number of each suit or blazer is produced, meaning you feel as though you have purchased a bespoke piece without the bespoke price tag.

Park Street incl Clements & Church

Sarah Horne – 86 Warwick Street, L Spa. www.sarahhorne.net
As a Chelsea Flower Show medallist you might think this would be home to the priciest flowers on the high street, not the case. The flowers are great value and are superior in quality to others I have purchased. The team are welcoming and happy to lend a hand in choosing from their array of, not only bouquets and flowers but innovative gifts such as the arrangements in china tea cups (a favourite of mine) to the outstanding range of own brand organic massage candles which I have gifted to friends and family and all have raved about them.

McIntosh & Paul – 133 Regent Street, L Spa. www.mcintoshandpaul.co.uk
A gift for that someone special who has everything or that hard to buy for relative, stop in at this local boutique and you are sure to be able to find something that fits the bill. As with all my favourites once again it’s the excellent friendly welcome and knowledge of their products that make it a hit with customers.

When you need a rest from all that shopping, you are spoilt for choice for relaxing with refreshments….

Haddie & Trilby, 10 Regent Street, L Spa, www.haddieandtrilby.com
Billed as a Real Bakery and named after the L.Spa elephants, this is a real gem.  Freshly baked on the premises in full view with local and in season ingredients the choices of breads and cakes are seemingly endless.  The products are simply heavenly from my Saturday treat of fresh foccacia to the creative cakes coupled with the knowledgable and passionate staff, every visit makes you smile.  If only all food could be made and bought this way.  Highly recommend the Thursday night pizzas.

Afternoon Tea Vinteas style

Afternoon Tea Vinteas style

Vinteas, 16 Park Street, L Spa, www.vinteas.co.uk
has capitalised on the trend for tea, serving from an extensive menu in a retro setting complete with mismatched vintage china.  I always feel as though I should dress up 1950’s style with white gloves, a pill box hat and a Grace Kelly style handbag. It offers full afternoon teas or just a pot for two. In my opinion no visit is complete without a slice of their red velvet cake, heaven. If tea isn’t your thing you could get the South American vibe by visiting:-

Havana, 48 Warwick Street, L Spa. www.cafehavana.co.uk. Its Cuban inspired décor and small but perfectly formed outside area, make me feel like I am on holiday.  Serving sandwiches, salads and tapas and the best coffee in Leamington, it’s equally perfect for breakfast, lunch or a coffee stop in the daytime or sipping fizz and sangria and dinner in the evening.  Wednesday nights it hosts salsa classes.

Relaxing mid shop

Alternatively try
Restaurant 23 & Morgan’s Bar, 34 Hamilton Terrace, L Spa. www.restaurant23.co.uk for a taste of fine dining or early evening cocktails. A gorgeous setting in the form of a restored regency villa.  You can almost pretend the bar complete with table service is your own living room (well I can dream can’t I?).

Who would make the little black book of your town?  Share your favourites with us on FB, Twitter or the website.  If they are Leamington based use the #LoveLeam.

Make this weekend and beyond about supporting your local businesses.

All Wrapped Up

The best part of winter for us at SYW are the stylish accessories to be sported. The ones that really finish your look whilst being practical enough to keep you snug against the elements.  Personally I have always hankered after living in an era where hats and gloves were de-rigeur and the world was more formal.

Stylish Ladies V&A John French Collection

Hats

More stylish than a hood, a hat can create instant drama or the focus of an outfit.  This year my love of a great cloche hat has not diminished.  There are some fab ones out there such as this asymmetric plum one from John Lewis.

However there’s a new hot shape in town.  Inspired by Prosecco & Plaid’s Jess Ann Kirby I am adoring the Fedora, just can’t decide on colour!

This multi coloured one by TopShop may be the answer, styled for a casual Sunday. Clockwise from top, Topshop, Wide Brimmed fedora Hat; Mint Velvet, Black and Ivory Crop Knit; Anedoti, Purple Elbow Length Gloves; Zara, Green Leather Trousers; LK Bennett, Scarlett Kid Leather Ankle Boot; Topshop, Textured Blanket Coat.

For men, fedoras and trilby hats can work, the trick is carry it off with confidence.  SYW thinks the allure is because they automatically conjure thoughts of old fashioned chivalry in the style of a Don Draperesque matinee idol, sigh.

Gloves

Everyone deserves a pair of good leather gloves.  The first pair I ever got were from the wonderful Sermoneta Gloves in Milan!  I’ve never looked back.  The very epitome of luxury, leather with a cashmere lining.  Opt for a rich colour with button detail to give an outfit pop and class.  Lilac Rose in Leamington Spa have this great selection

The elbow length glove, not merely reserved for accompanying ball gowns but a great winter wear staple.  A ruche detail elbow length glove can be surprisingly stylish and practical when teamed with a bracelet sleeve jacket or coat.  Try these Anedoti Gloves, they also come in this stunning purple

For men we think classic is always the way to go and love  a well fitted pair of fine black leather gloves, like this pair from Hugo Boss.

Seasonal Sparkle

Posted on: November 19th, 2014 by Emma No Comments

Need outfit inspiration for the office Christmas party or a knockout New Year ensemble, SYW has been compiling handy hints and tips on dressing for the most glamorous time of the year.

The high street has embraced all that glitters, shines and sparkles.  Think it’s not for you?  Sparkle does not mean looking like a Christmas decoration (unless that’s your preference).  Try our ideas for 3 types of sparkling festive engagement.

Office Party

When putting together a look that is both professional and party appropriate, embellished pieces are great.  They can work as daytime wear when approached a certain way, making them perfect for the office party (or any other occasion) when a full outfit change is not practical and you need something to carry you effortlessly from day to eve.  Take one glamorous dress, such as this one from Darling which will suit both athletic shapes and petite hourglasses.

Darling Dress; TopShop White Shirt; Soru Onyx Cord Tie Bracelet; TopShop Haemetite Bead Earrings

Darling Dress; TopShop White Shirt; Soru Onyx Cord Tie Bracelet; TopShop Haemetite Bead Earrings

Add a plain knit over the top or a smart shirt underneath.  Wear with plain court shoes or brogues.  When it’s time to get the party started, simply remove your knit/shirt,  swap out your shoes for some killer heels and add the statement accessories stashed in your handbag.  We love the Folli Follie earrings  which have a clever magnet which lowers the drop from day to eve appropriate with a snap.  Desk to champagne reception transformation in less than 5 mins.

All Day Get Togethers

For those family gatherings or meet ups with old friends which may start at lunchtime but could easily segue through to midnight, you want to look refined but relaxed.  This is where the hardworking A-Line midi comes in.  Make it festive by choosing one with glossy sequins such as Whistles Cecil sparkle skirt.  Team with a textured knit and you’re covered from cosy do’s in country pubs to house parties and even work socials.  Turn the look on its head and go for plain all over with a textured A line midi and fine knit and punctuate with a statement shoe such as these gorgeous jewelled pumps from Boden.  What’s great about the A line midi is that it works well on all shapes.  Wear with boots to dress down further or with a killer heel to amp it up.

Boden embellished jumper, 3.1 Phillip Lim Gold Handbag, Dorothy Perkins Gold Shoe Boot, Gap Real Straight Dark Jeans

More a jeans and tee kind of gal? Embrace an embellished jumper.  Expert at elevating the humble jean, especially if you also deign to rock a glittery boot.

Remember if you have a larger bust, a V or sweetheart neckline will be more flattering in an embellished jumper.

Black Tie/Formal

Sequins, embellishment and all that glitters can really come into their own for formal events , it’s the excuse to break out the high octane evening gown.  Those feeling brave can go head to foot in sequins, SYW loves this Phase Eight number.   This captures full on Hollywood glamour and suits those with a vintage hourglass hollywood starlet shape.

Prefer trousers? Copy the boys and grab a tux.  This season the classic look has an injection of high voltage glamour with the addition of an embellished jacket or molten metal accessories to tuxedo trousers/cigarette pants.

If you really aren’t into metallics and sequins then monochrome offers a great way to achieve a glam but more minimal look.  Bring the tux into the dress as with this little number from Paper Doll.  Finish with some statement shoes such as these funky Kurt Geiger black sequin pair.

Boot-A-Licious

Posted on: November 9th, 2014 by Emma No Comments

SYW’s favourite go with everything boots just won’t last another winter, sob.  I have been scouring retailers on and offline in pursuit of the perfect pair to replace them.  I’m sure you may be on a similar hunt, so here’s SYW’s thoughts on the boots that are out there this season and what to pair them with.

Hunt over, new boots found

Hunt over, new boots found

Footwear is the one place where your choices may not currently be influenced by your shape but follow these tips and we promise you will see the difference.

Keep in mind the point at which your boot finishes basic rule of thumb – avoid a finish on the widest part of your leg.

  • Petite types go for a leg lengthening mid ankle finish and a heel;
  • For Strawberry/Hourglass and Pears balance is the key.  A block heel combined with a knee length finish which is cut on the diagonal (with the back finishing lower than the front) achieves this.
  • If you are an athletic build or are very lucky and have slim legs that go on for miles, show them off and go for an over the knee finish or a just over the top of the ankle style.  Just watch the fit isn’t too big, you don’t want the tops to look like wellies.

Universally flattering style, and SYW’s boot of choice, the shoe boot.  Avoids any ankle or leg length hang ups and ticks SYW’s requirement of multitasking.  Wear with anything from under jeans to the classic pretty dress/boot combo.

Hemline/Boot Top Ratio a.k.a. the gap between boots ending and outfit starting.  After trial and error, SYW has settled on 3-4 centimetres as the optimal ratio.  Either your boots finish at least 3-4 centimetres inches below your hemline or your hemline should overhang your boots by 3-4 centimetres.

Boot/Blanket Cape Combo with good hemline/boot ratio

Boot/Blanket Cape Combo with good hemline/boot ratio

Knee length and over the knee boots are having a renaissance.  If you love knee length boots but avoid them because they never seem to fit properly, Duo Boots offer a fabulous solution with boots tailored not just by size and foot width but individual calf measurement.  With a huge range of boots, there’s bound to be something you love.   Knee Length works really well with so many looks but it’s the perfect compliment for this season’s leggings/skinny jeans and a cape style coat or alternatively the jumper dress.  H&M’s brown knee highs fit the bill perfectly.

The classic riding boot ticks the boxes for smart weekend wear and provides a chic alternative to heels.  For super smart we like the black patent Florence from Duo Boots or alternatively Clark’s Lindley boot for those who like the boot in an authentic tan.  For a more relaxed take try a sand coloured pair like Jigsaw’s Marylebone

Hands up anyone who thinks “over the knee boot” and immediately pictures Julia Roberts in Pretty Women?  That’s set to change this season with a more luxe elegant feel, like the gorgeous Ditta suede pair from (once again) Duo Boots.  They provide a perfect foil to a prim pencil skirt.

We can’t resist a bit of colour in our boots and love the red/purple combo of LK Bennett’s Scarlet Kid Calf boot.    Equally we are loving the full on encrusted glitter look that is featuring from Boden’s Soho Ankle Boot in glitter to Duo Boots Blondie in black glitter.

Got it Covered

Posted on: November 2nd, 2014 by Emma No Comments

The great winter cover up is upon us finally.  We have been inspired by the catwalk offerings of Balenciaga and Victoria Beckham .

If you are still wondering about which coat to invest in to take you through winter the good news is lots of different styles this year making it easy to find one which suits your shape.  As an added bonus some of the retailers also have some great discounts at the moment – Phase Eight is offering £50 off all coats and Planet currently have 20% of all items. H&M is also offering some great discounts on coats.

Kicking off with  an all rounder which suits most shapes – one of the most popular coats of A/W 14 The Cape/Blanket

If you have an athletic slim build then it creates curves and accentuates your legs.  It works equally well  on Strawberry shapes (larger bust narrower waist and hips) because it plays up the contrast between the wide and narrow silhouette.   ticks the boxes.

Hourglass and pear shapes can also work this trend by choosing a piece that can be gathered at the waist but most importantly taking care that the hem does not fall across the hips.    delivers on this front.  Pear shapes can adopt detailing around the lapels/bust area whereas hourglasses should focus on fluid simple lines.

Not sure about full on cape/blanket coat? Try  take on it which nods at the look but retains more structure, would suit those who are petite or who would prefer to keep the emphasis on the waist.

Next up the hardworking Parka

SYW is of  an age which remembers this coat as being attached around heads as capes in the playground but it’s moved on to become a style staple that the high street has very much embraced this winter.  It’s versatility is key, practical for bracing Autumn walks and bonfire parties whilst still remaining suitable for out and about around town.   Our favourite is  look.  A definite friend of the athletic build, but pick the right one and it can work for all shapes with the exception of the Strawberry (sorry it creates a little too much bulk in the wrong places).  Use the same tips as for the blanket/cape,  works well with its drawstring waist

For a smarter look try the Duster Coat

Works as well with jeans as it does with office attire.  What is great about this shape is that the high street has adopted it in a wide range of pattern and colour.  SYW always thinks there is something a little subversive about throwing on a bright coat in the face of stormy grey weather conditions. The  is SYW’s top option.  If colour on the outside is a bit much for you, opt for a bright lining instead.

This shape works particularly well on pear shapes and strawberry shapes because it creates a balance between the two halves of the body.

Pears should look to double breasted with detailing such as a leather lapel one is a great example

Strawberries should do the opposite and seek single breasted with clean lines. See this . For best results wear with fitted clothing such as a pencil skirt.

Just a few suggestions for the essential winter staple for more inspiration follow our Pinterest Board – Got It Covered.

Shape of Autumn

Posted on: October 12th, 2014 by Emma No Comments
Colour inspiration from Autumn Leaves

Colour inspiration from Autumn leaves

It’s customary to look at the trends before the season starts but I prefer to do it slightly later, when the high street has revealed it’s stock and more importantly you feel like buying season appropriate items.  This blog is timed to coincide with SYW’s own half yearly seasonal switchover, where forgotten pieces come out of storage and a refreshed wardrobe appears often with no purchases necessary.  If you too have been meaning to get around to checking out what’s in store for your wardrobe or working out what will survive your own switchover this season, look no further, I have trawled the catalogues, magazines and fashion blogosphere to help you out.

First up, just because it’s Autumn does not mean you should ditch the colour from your wardrobe (unless you want to).

The colours making a strong impact in your Autumn wardrobe take their cue from nature and are likely to be red and mustard.  Wear as a block, part of a pattern or simply use as an accent.

If you are loathe to say goodbye to the brights and neons of the summer, don’t!  Use them as your pick me up to see you gently through Autumn into winter.   Pair them with your greys and blacks, seen here to great effect at Hush Or use to break up the monochrome look.  Here at SYW we are all over the graphic prints in various colour ways as our early transition wardrobe shows.

It's all about the print

It’s all about the print

We’re in love with our H&M number which ticks the boxes for pear shapes and hourglasses by accentuating the waist whilst skimming hips and thighs

Print and Mustard in one piece

Print and Mustard in our H&M Dress

Jewel type prints provide an alternative route way to the embellishment trend – is one of our faves.

Turning to a couple of the key looks from amongst the Autumn’s offerings

Ladylike

Key pieces and patterns collide meaning this look is easy to achieve. Hardworking it covers office chic  through to saturday afternoon casual.  Classic houndstooth is a brilliant way to do this, see or (it’s A-line shape is perfect for those with a strawberry shape).  Accent  a dogtooth with red accessories like et voilaThe pencil skirt, ideal for most shapes, is also a great canvas for dogtooth, block colour and if you are feeling a little decadent try a leather version, go pastel like from River Island or go Ox-blood or emerald green.  I’ve lived in my Reiss Oxblood version since last Autumn as it’s so versatile.

Kilts are all over the high street from Sainsbury’s to Karen Millen and can be the perfect embodiment of ladylike.  With so many on offer you will find one to suit your shape whether it’s a long mid  A line like , mid length but square like or for a mini version try Sainbury’s http://bit.ly/1szeqXx  or Karen Millen’s http://bit.ly/1EIsnqE,   team with your boot of the season (look our for our forthcoming blog) and a plain knit in a striking contrast colour.

Magical Gothic

A complete contrast  to the ladylike look but also a great way to ease into Autumn Winter.  It is based on taking tactile and snuggly fabrics and weaving gothic imagery and colours to create drama and comfort in one outfit.  Channel an inner gothic flair with the florals that were a big hit in SS14 but set them against dark back drops for added drama.  Closet has this  whilst LK Bennett’s silk sleeve Tee brings an easy way to introduce the florals.  M&S also has a great pencil skirt in its Limited Edition range but currently it’s only available in store.

Fluffy gilets and jumpers introduce the touchy feely element.  Our pick from the high street are Jigsaw’s faux fur version and M&S’ fluffy cardigan.  Wear with jeans or a great pair of trousers in a sumptuous fabric like this velvet pair from Zara.  Alternatively a pleated skirt such as this pale burnt orange one from M&S which keeps the romantic feel.

Capsule Wardrobe Part 2 – The Frock

Posted on: June 25th, 2014 by Emma No Comments

Probably not an item often mentioned as part of a capsule wardrobe but I think it should be, particularly for a summer wardrobe. Frock is an old fashioned term but just the word brings to mind a piece that is celebrates femininity and has a timelessness about it that means you will be reaching for it season after season.  Both things which in SYW’s book earn an item capsule wardrobe status.  I return year after year to a blue and white Fever palm tree print number, which makes me feel elegant timeless and summery the moment I put it on.

The Frock takes its cue from vintage styles particularly the 40’ and 50’s, not surprising really when you think that despite wartime and post war austerity, those era’s knew know how to give good frock.  John Lewis has recognised this as part of its 150th birthday celebrations by reviving post war patterns on a limited edition basis, my pick is this floral number .   I am a big fan of the brands Darling, Emily & Fin, Louche and Fever who do vintage inspired modern frocks.  My first stop for a new frock are local independent boutiques Lilac Rose and Lily & Mabel stockists of these labels.

A good frock must be capable of being worn for all occasions from the boardroom to the ballroom and everything in between.  Changing its mood is all in the pairing of shoes and accessories.  Take Ted Baker’s tea dress inspired nude pink frock  http://bit.ly/1o4w8y0 add flat pumps for that Sunday afternoon feel but pair it with high wedges and statement earrings and you are ready for the cocktail hour.

Follow the capsule wardrobe rules, spend as much as you can afford, give it a personal touch that reflects your personality (perhaps a quirky print) and pick the frock to flatter your figure.  For me pattern is what makes a frock rock, from floral to polka dot, who can forget Julia Roberts at the polo in Pretty Woman in the chocolate polka dot number?  Don’t be afraid of pattern, try these tips:-

Taller or curvier figures suit larger, simpler prints, Phase Eight’s poppy print dress is one to go for   Jungle print is popular this season and ticks the simplicity box, Dorothy Perkins’ tunic captures the essence of this print http://bit.ly/1mrYJOi

Patterns should be used to draw focus to your best features.  For example patterns which get more detailed toward the bottom of a dress , like this maxi dress from Darling ,can help take the attention away from a larger bust.

Small detailed patterns and textures help in creating curves for those with more athletic figures. Warehouse’s crepe shift and Oasis’ floral bandeau   do this brilliantly.

As for length/style the midi length is universally flattering and is the length right now. Try Fever’s 40’s style tea dress  .   A style that works on most shapes is the fit and flare – LK Bennett’s Annai and Louche’s Gretta really show this style off.  The trick is to adopt a neckline that works for you, wider straps or halter necks for broader shoulders, sweetheart or v necks for larger busts.  Higher flat fronted necks with detailing are the order of the day for smaller busts or pear shapes and thin straps and bandeau necks work well on athletic figures.

For our pick of the frocks See SYW’s Pinterest Board The Frock Follow Shape Your Wardrobe's board Capsule Wardrobe Part 2 -The Frock on Pinterest.

If you want to get your Frock on but don’t know where to start get in touch to arrange your SYW consultation.  Are you a frock fan or convert?  We’d love to see your favourite frocks, post us a picture here or on Twitter using #showusyourfrocks.

Trips and Packing Tips

Eyeing up the High Life

Eyeing up the High Life

Last week I was lucky enough to take a trip to Cannes, during the film festival, fulfilling a long held dream of seeing the red carpet up close. I was still a little far from the dresses but have a look at my Pinterest page for my pics of the best looks of the festival

Newly returned from being a spectator of the high life and luxury yachts got me thinking about small spaces and my own packing.  It’s all very well for all the stars but what happens when you don’t have the luxury of travelling by private jet or boat and travel on the rather less glamorous budget airlines? How do you remain stylish for your break?  Here are my tried and tested packing tips.

Packing for the French Riviera

Packing for the French Riviera

Don’t look in your wardrobe – This may sound odd but if I actually look in the wardrobe I have the urge to take everything, the road to overpacking this way lies.   To avoid this I grab a cuppa and a notebook.  I make a note of how many nights and days I will be away and what activities I am likely to be involved in.  Then I mentally peruse my wardrobe for items that will be suitable and list them under headings by clothing type, shoes, trouser etc.  When I look at the list I can clearly see in black and white whether I am taking too much or too little, in one case 10 Tshirts/tops for a 3 day trip!  Only once I have identified specific items or in some cases how many of a type of outfit, i.e. two evening outfits do I actually go to the wardrobe.

Multi Tasking – It may not work in real life but it’s a must for any holiday wardrobe.  When you look at your list (or if you are more visual, when you have laid out the items in your list, again grouped into clothing type) every item should match more than one other item.  This is the way I like to build in a choice of outfits without necessarily taking extra items. Selecting shoes with multiple outfits in mind can be particularly helpful.  Also choose hardworking items that  can take you from day to evening or be worn for either situation.  I like maxi dresses for this. I have a gold lace detail strapless one which I dress down with flip flops in the daytime and dress up for evening with elegant wedges and complimentary jewellery.  A pair of patterned silk trousers can also work well, worn with a t shirt for daytime and and embellished fine knit for evening.

Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise – A subset of multitasking, accessories can change the look and feel or even create a new outfit.  Glamour and drama can be created by adding the right necklace and bracelet. A  beach cover up can be transformed into a chic dress simply by cinching in the waist with a statement belt and adding heels.  The added bonus is that accessories generally use take less of your precious luggage allowance than clothes.

Colour Theme – As a result of multi- tasking I often end up with a colour theme to my holiday wardrobe.  This time around it was yellow, which I thought the perfect compliment to my French Riviera destination.

....and the theme was yellow

….and the theme was yellow

Roll don’t fold – An age old tip but so effective, I couldn’t leave it out.  It maximises your space and minimises wrinkling, what’s not to like?

Avoid luggage loss crisis – If you are not travelling alone then try putting an outfit and a change of underwear in your travelling companion’s suitcase and vice versa.  That one way if one suitcase gets lost you both still have some clothes.  Chances are if one of you has everything and one of you has nothing, especially if you are travelling in a couple, there will be a less than harmonious start to your break.   Obviously nothing can be done if everyone’s luggage doesn’t make it (of course there are always shops, but who wants to spend the first part of any holiday shopping because you have to?) but some well chosen items in your carry on can help with this.  I usually go for a bikini, a day to eve dress, a change of underwear and some make up.  I also try, climate permitting, to ensure what I am wearing to travel doubles as a holiday appropriate outfit.  A well packed carry on means even if you arrive and your luggage doesn’t, you can still hit the sights/beach/pool/bar without delay.

From the opening of one of the World’s most prestigious film festivals by a film focused on the story of one and the recent celebrations of the anniversary of what would have been another’s 85th birthday, my thoughts have turned to iconic women of past eras. I am referring to the inimitable Grace Kelly and the timeless Audrey Hepburn.

I have worshipped at the shrine of Audrey since first falling under her spell in Breakfast at Tiffany’s as a teenager and lost count of the number of times I have imagined myself as Kelly in To Catch a Thief leading Cary Grant a merry dance around the French Riviera.   But what accounts for these women’s relevance to today’s modern women?

My attempt to emulate Audrey!

My attempt to emulate Audrey!

I think that their appeal comes from the fact that they were not only stylish in their clothing choices but in the truest sense of the word, poised, elegant and exuding class. You can’t imagine either resorting to the kind of fashion one upmanship today’s filmstar/celebrities like to engage in. I like to think that they both managed to retain something of their true selves whilst still being successful in an industry not known for allowing this.  They both had signature styles which they adapted throughout their lifetimes. Kelly, had the ultimate hurdle – adapting hers to royalty.

Although not blessed with either of their body shapes, figures or bone structures their styles are something I return to for inspiration often. So with that in mind I have compiled some of my very favourite of their looks Follow Shape Your Wardrobe's board Style Icons on Pinterest.

I’ll be using it to inspire my wardrobe for my trip to the Cote D’Azur next week.
